Southern Discoveries is a substantial tourism company operating in the Southern Lakes and Fiordland region. The primary business activities are cruising operations in Milford Sound and on Lake Wakatipu. The company also operates “Go Milford” coach services between Te Anau and Milford, the Discovery Centre and guided kayak tours in Milford, a farm tour operation at Mt Nicholas High Country Station and a number of travel retailing businesses in Queenstown, Te Anau and Milford Sound.
The Discovery Centre is a floating facility in Milford Sound that provides guided talks to people from all over the globe on the natural wonders below the waters of Fiordland. It requires an enthusiastic, energetic person who is passionate about sharing this information with a high level of customer service and teamwork in mind.
Our kayaking operation is at its peak during the summer season and staff members are given the opportunity to train as kayak guides.
Due to the very remote location, the close knit team rely on each individual to pull their own weight and are expected to dig in and get dirty with any maintenance, cleaning and hands on jobs that may require attention.
It takes 15 minutes by boat to get to the Discovery Centre and the day is spent on the water, around boats. Previous experience in any marine activities is desirable and confidence around the water is necessary. Holding a current first aid certificate is beneficial.
The three positions are live-in, with a working roster of 10 days on and 4 days off. Subsidised board and lodging is provided in this isolated part of New Zealand which is suited to individuals who can live without cell phones or consistent access to social media.
If you enjoy a range of challenges and dealing with something different each day in a beautiful marine reserve, the Discovery Centre is an awesome place to work. If you would like the opportunity to live and work in the Fiordland National Park with a group of fun, nature-lovin’ people, please apply!
Positions commence early August and mid September.
All applicants will be interviewed “face to face” in Milford Sound and there is a pre-employment drug test prior to written confirmation of employment.
